The Conservatives demanded a federal inquiry into this week's fatal fire on HMCS Chicoutimi as the tragedy ignited a second day of political uproar in the House of Commons Thursday.
"When can we expect a full inquiry into what took place?" leader Stephen Harper said as he urged the Liberal government to launch an independent investigation into Tuesday's fire, which led to the death of one submariner and landed two others in the hospital.
Defence Minister Bill Graham replied that it will be up to the military, not the federal government, to investigate what caused the electrical fire to break out as the newly acquired submarine travelled from Scotland to Halifax. A British Navy tug began towing the vessel late Thursday, after it drifted for three days in rough seas off Ireland.
