Ontario's Environment Ministry will examine the idea of a deposit-return system for liquor and wine containers similar to those at work at the province's beer stores and in most other provinces, Premier Dalton McGuinty said yesterday, without committing to changing it.
Local municipalities and the province's environment commissioner want consumers to be able to return liquor and wine bottles and containers to Liquor Control Board of Ontario stores, instead of having to place them inside blue box recycling bins.
Environment Commissioner Gord Miller told a legislative committee Tuesday that statistics show one-third of Ontario's used bottles, nearly half the province's plastic containers and aluminum cans, and 75 per cent of the new carton-style packages sold at liquor stores end up in landfills.
By contrast, Ontario's Beer Stores have a 99-per-cent recovery rate for returnable glass bottles and a 90-per-cent return rate for aluminum beer cans.
