Speculation about a spring federal election moved into high gear on Parliament Hill Tuesday despite Prime Minister Stephen Harper's insistence he has no plans to trigger a vote anytime soon.
Speaking briefly to reporters, Harper said he recognizes that Monday's Quebec election, which had a strong showing for Mario Dumont's right of centre ADQ, re-elected Liberal Premier Jean Charest and saw the sovereigntist Parti Québécois relegated to third place has fuelled speculation the Conservatives may try to engineer their own defeat on a confidence vote to take advantage of the possibility of more seats in Quebec.
"I know everybody sees election opportunities in this but the public didn't elect me to sit around looking for election opportunities," Harper said on his way into a particularly raucous Question Period, where Conservative MPs appeared buoyed by the Quebec election results.
The public elected me and elected our government to govern on its platform. We've got a lot of work to do to continue to get things done. We're getting things done. We’ve got a lot of stuff before Parliament that still has to get passed and that’' the first job of this government, to get things passed. And I hope the opposition will heed some of these results and help us get some things done in the next few weeks." Source...
