Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced Wednesday that David Lloyd Johnston, the president of the University of Waterloo, will be the third party investigator looking into the Mulroney-Schreiber affair.

Johnston is a former principal of McGill University who has taught law at Queen's University and the University of Toronto. Over the years, he has headed up several advisory bodies for both Liberal and Conservative governments. Johnston has also been appointed as a Companion of the Order of Canada.

Karlheinz Schreiber, a businessman facing extradition to Germany where he faces fraud allegations, has said in court documents here in Canada that he paid former prime minister Brian Mulroney $300,000 cash payments shortly after Mulroney left office.

Schreiber has also alleged the two met to discuss business matters while Mulroney was still prime minister. None of the allegations has been proven in court, and Mulroney has denied the accusations.

During question period Wednesday, the Liberals said they wanted a completely independent inquiry, one that would look into the actions of the prime minister, his government, and the justice minister. Source...
