Certainly, some of those ideas not only stuck,
they spread to the point where Canadians of all
political stripes take it for granted the books
should be balanced and inflation should be low.

"The broad acceptance of a balanced budget as
the obligation of just about every political party
in just about every circumstance," author John
Gray says, stands as "one of the great triumphs"
of Martin's political career.

Despite Martin's early achievements, it was no
secret he remained determined to do what his
father had not: lead the party and the country.
